[Updated] 27 August 2020 – Included new trailer and information from the Awesome Indies Showcase regarding the new entry in the Wonder Boy series.

During Gamescom’s pre-show event, news of a new entry in the long-running Wonder Boy series has been announced by the gaming website IGN. Currently very little is known about this title, with more details coming during the Awesome Indies showcase.

However, what we are confident about is that the game sees the return of Monster World IV’s protagonist, the energetic Asha. As well as many of the charming characters from Wonder Boy IV. Including Asha’s adorable Pepelogoo sidekick.

This makes us wonder whether this title is a brand-new adventure, a remake of Wonder Boy IV, or something in-between. A remake would also be fantastic news for fans. Especially considering the 1994 Mega Drive original is a Japanese exclusive.

Regardless, we’re excited to see if this new title turns out as good as Lizard Cube’s Wonder Boy and the Dragon’s Trap remake. If so gamers are in for a treat.

The title is being developed by STUDIOARTDINK and ININ Games, and will also be directed by members of the original Wonder Boy creative team. This includes series creator Ryuichi Nishizawa as the game’s director, character designer Maki Ozora and series composer Shinichi Sakamoto.

We will be looking forward for new information later in the week and will keep you updated.

It appears this game is a remake of 1994’s Monster World IV. The title will also use colorful 3D models in place of the originals 16-bit sprites.

While this is a little bit of a disappointment to many, myself included. As I am sure many gamers were looking forward to 2D hand-drawn sprites. Similar to those in the Monster’s Trap remake.

The title is due for release in the first quarter of 2021 and is currently confirmed for the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4. Currently, there is no mention as to an Xbox or PC release.

So to help you pass the time we’ve decided to compile our top 5 retro-inspired games to play in lockdown. We’ve tried to keep a mix of titles, and they are in no particular order.

For the sake of transparency, all titles in this list I have purchased myself, no publisher has asked to have a title included on this page. Affiliate links to each game on Amazon and ebay are included, any purchases made using these links go directly to the running of this site.

Sonic Mania Plus (PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC)

No list that I create about classic games would be complete without a Sonic the Hedgehog title in there somewhere – so here it is.
For those of you who were living under a rock in 2018, Sonic Mania is Sonic’s triumphant return to the old-school Sonic the Hedgehog formula. With 13 stages, five characters, four-player versus mode and a new remixed ‘Mania’ mode.

For fans of classic 2D Sonic action, you cannot do better than Sonic Mania Plus. For those who already purchased Sonic Mania, the ‘plus’ features can be picked up as downloadable content for less than £4!

Stardew Valley (PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC, iOS, Android)

Looking for a title to relax to while in lockdown? Then look no further than Stardew Valley, the best Harvest Moon game that isn’t Harvest Moon!

Stardew Valley sees you take ownership of a dilapidated farm in a new town. Here you can spend your time tending to the crops, looking after the livestock, landscaping around your farm, building new structures, exploring the dangerous caves, befriending the local townspeople… *phew* let’s just say there’s plenty to do in this excellent farm simulator.

Stardew Valley is available on any modern device, including mobile. Priced at around £11.99 this game has hours and hours of gameplay – as well as an online co-op for up to four players!

Streets of Rage 4 (PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC)

The most modern title on this list, Streets of Rage 4 is the sequel that took over two and a half decades to be released! Featuring the original cast; Axel, Blaze, and Adam, along with newcomers Cherry and Floyd, you’ll be exploring Wood Oak City to track down the mysterious new crime syndicate that’s taken over the city.

Featuring silky smooth 60 frames per second action, a new combo system, unlockable classic characters, battle and boss rush modes, as well as 4 player local co-op for the first time in the series’ history.

Streets of Rage 4 can be purchased digitally and is available as part of Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for both Xbox One and Windows 10 gamers. A physical release by Limited Run games is also available at launch.

Megaman Zero/ZX Collection (PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC)

While not technically ‘retro inspired’, Capcom’s Mega Man Zero/ZX Collection is a fantastic compilations of six excellent Mega Man titles. Featuring the Game Boy Advance Mega Man Zero 1, 2, 3 and 4 titles, as well as the Nintendo DS’s Mega Man ZX and ZX Advent, there’s a lot of brutally difficult 2D action to be had here.

On top of six full games you have the all-new Z Chasers mode, allowing you to compete in time attack style challenges against your friends, as well as a gallery and music player allowing you to view content from all six games.

Also, did I mention that this collection contains SIX GAMES? A must buy for any Mega Man and 2D action-adventure fans.

Wargroove (PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC)

Back when the Game Boy Advance came out, the first game I had purchased was Advanced Wars. This little strategy game kept my glued to my little purple console for hours on end and now it’s spiritual successor, Wargroove, is available for Xbox, Switch and PC.

With four unique factions, 12 commanders and over 40 hours of content across single player, multiplayer co-op and competitive maps, there’s a plethora of content to keep you coming back again and again.

Alex Kidd returns for his first game after a long 30 year hiatus, with his pixel style adventure recreating his iconic adventure in Miracle World.

Following in the footsteps as other recent Sega remakes and sequels such as Sonic Mania, Streets of Rage 4 and Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap, Sega is handing the reigns to indie developers Merge Games and Jankenteam.

Expanding on the original title, Miracle World DX is set to included new artwork and remastered music, new modes, alternative boss battles and new stages.

However, for players that prefer the Master System original, there is also a ‘classic mode’ that removes the new additions and allows you to play through a recreation of the 8-bit title.

Alex Kidd returns in 2021 and will be coming to PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.

The Nexus introduces a range of long-requested features, including dual analogue controls, a larger widescreen display, and enhanced performance aimed squarely at more demanding retro platforms such as the original PlayStation and Nintendo 64. This announcement positions the Nexus not as a simple upgrade, but as a generational leap that expands the scope of what Evercade hardware is capable of delivering.

Changes for a ‘Modern’ Retro Experience

As Blaze has expanded the range of Evercade cartridges to cover not just the 8-bit and 16-bit systems but pushing into the 32-bit generation. We have seen this with titles such as the Tomb Raider Collection and Legacy of Kain Collection. It was clear that soon the humble Evercade would need an upgrade to handle these more demanding titles.

Firstly there’s the changes you can’t see, the ones lying just under the hood. The Evercade Nexus delivers a noticeable boost in power with a more powerful quad-core processor. There is also new wireless connectivity options, including the ability for two Evercade Nexus devices to play local multiplayer titles with only a single cartridge using EverSync. A feature reminiscent of the Game Boy Advance’s Single-Pak linking, but without the cables!

Moving onto the more noticeable changes, the one to most likely catch your eye is the new 5.89″ widescreen display. A significant step up from the 4.3″ screen found on the current Evercade EXP. This change reflects a broader shift in focus. While previous devices were tailored primarily for 8-bit and 16-bit titles, the Nexus is clearly designed with later generations in mind. PlayStation-era games and widescreen titles all stand to benefit from the increased screen real estate.

Controls that Matter

Then we move on to what could be the most significant addition to the Nexus – the inclusion of dual analogue sticks. A first for any Evercade device. Their absence on the EXP was one of the most common criticisms, particularly as the Evercade library began to expand beyond strictly 2D titles into the PlayStation generation.

The Nexus addresses that limitation directly. With dual sticks in place, the system is now better equipped to handle 3D games from the late 1990s and early 2000s, offering more intuitive control schemes and improved compatibility across a wider range of titles – which brings us onto another announcement almost as exciting as the new hardware…

Full Compatibility with Existing Cartridges

Despite its many upgrades, the Evercade Nexus remains fully compatible with the existing Evercade cartridge library. This includes hundreds of officially licensed games spanning arcade classics, home console releases, and modern retro-inspired titles. But to get your new retro cartridge collection off to a great start the Evercade Nexus comes with the N64 classics Banzo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie on a dual game cartridge.

For existing users, this full backwards compatibility ensures you can continue to enjoy the titles you already own. For newcomers, it provides immediate access to a substantial and growing catalogue.

Nexus vs EXP vs VS: A Clear Evolution

The Evercade EXP, released in 2022, refined the original handheld formula but remained focused on 2D gaming and traditional controls. The Evercade VS, launched in 2021, expanded the ecosystem into the living room with a home console built for multiplayer.

The Nexus, by comparison, brings those ideas together while pushing the platform forward. With its enhanced controls, improved hardware, and broader design ambitions, it represents a clear evolution rather than a simple iteration.

Blaze has positioned the Evercade Nexus as a premium handheld, with a launch price of £169.99 in the UK. While this places it above the Evercade EXP, the additional features and improvements reflect its expanded role within the lineup. There will also be a special ’64 Edition’ with an exclusive N64 inspired colour way. This version also includes a protective hard shell case and A3 poster for £189.99. Although like past versions of Evercade’s limited edition consoles this is limited to only 2,000 units and is likely to sell out extremely quickly.

The developers, Rabbit and Bear Studios, are looking to raise a rather modest £396,500 from the Eiyuden Kickstarter. With a range of reward tiers ranging from digital copies of the game to vinyl soundtracks and even the chance to become an NPC in the game!

The short clip they show on the campaign pages has a mix of PlayStation era style sprites, mixed with modern 3D backgrounds. Both of which fit in nicely together to give the game a very cohesive appearance.

If you’re interested in backing the campaign we would like to advise caution. Not because we don’t believe in what Rabbit and Bear Studios can achieve with Eiyuden. More because of the risks involved with backing games on platforms like Kickstart. We all remember what happened with Mighty No. 9 after all.

Rabbit and Bear are looking to release Eiyuden around October 2022. With current consoles targeted being the Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo’s current system at that time.
