The Street Fighter Movie Trailer Lands a Perfect Combo of Chaos, Nostalgia and Pure Arcade Energy

After years of rumours, casting reveals and a heaping of cautious optimism, the first full trailer for the new Street Fighter movie has finally arrived. Now depending on who you ask, it either looks like it might actually understand what made Capcom’s legendary fighter such a phenomenon in the first place. Or a disaster of a movie on a scale not seen since Mortal Kombat: Annihilation.

Rather than softening some of the more over the top aspects of the series, the upcoming movie appears to lean into them. The outrageous characters, globe-trotting tournament drama, impossible attacks and just the right amount of self-aware camp.

Set in 1993, the trailer follows estranged fighters Ryu and Ken as they’re pulled into the World Warrior Tournament by Chun-Li. But all is not as it seems as they discover a larger conspiracy unfolding behind the scenes. That timeline is a clever touch for retro fans. Placing the story in the early ‘90s roots the film in the golden age of Street Fighter II, the exact moment the series exploded in arcades and became a worldwide obsession.

The trailer wastes no time showing off its stacked cast. Noah Centineo brings swagger and flash to Ken Masters and Andrew Koji looks every bit the focused martial artist as Ryu. Callina Liang appears front and centre as Chun-Li, acting as the story’s catalyst. Elsewhere, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it shots reveal Jason Momoa as Blanka, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson as Balrog, and Roman Reigns as Akuma. It’s the kind of gloriously over-the-top casting choice this series almost demands.

Street Fighter movie poster showcasing iconic characters Ryu, Chun Li and Ken.

There are nods throughout the trailer longtime fans will appreciate. Classic tournament imagery, Chun-Li in pursuit of justice, and the promise of iconic moves. It feels designed by people who know the absurdity of what Street Fighter really is. Not just the combat, but the spectacle and personalities of each character.

For older fans, memories of the 1994 Street Fighter starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and Raúl Juliá still loom large. That film became a cult favourite precisely because it embraced absurdity. This new version appears to understand the same lesson, but with a far bigger budget and a sharper sense of what fans actually want.

Will it be good? Nobody knows yet. I will admit that this first full trailer doesn’t fill me with confidence. But neither does it fill me with dread. We can only wait until October for it’s launch before we all shout one word: Fight!

Pyra and Mythra, two of the central characters from the Switch role playing game Xenoblade Chronicles 2, are the latest addition to the Super Smash Bros Ultimate lineup.

Announced at this evening’s Nintendo Direct. Pyra and Mythra will be coming to the popular Switch brawler as part of the title’s second Fighter Pass. These two fighters will mark the second and third playable fighters from the Xenoblade games, following on from series favourite Shulk.

Fans will likely be worried about the inclusion of yet another sword user joining Ultimate’s roster. However, Pyra/Mythra have a unique twist up their sleeves. The ability to tag in and out at will during a battle.

Fighting as each character will influence your fighting style. Where as the hot-headed Pyra unleashes explosive and powerful attacks. The more calm and collected Mythra will grant the player increased agility. To take advantage of this due, players will need to learn when to switch.

Long-time fans of the Smash Bros series will recognise this set up as how Zelda and Shiek worked in earlier entries.

Other Xenoblade Chronicles 2 fan favourites will also make an appearance. Including title protagonist Rex, who will lend a hand to help either Pyra or Mythra pull off their devastating Smash moves.

There will of course be a new Xenoblade Chronicles 2 stage, that appears to have fighters battling it out amongst the clouds on the back of ‘gramps’. You’ll even get spurred on by some of your fellow party members cheering you on from the side-lines!

You’ll be able to join the fight as Pyra and Mythra when they’re available in March 2021.

Hopefully this trailer is just the start of what we can expect from Sonic’s 35th anniversary. By the time the trailer finishes, it’s hard not to feel hyped. In fact it’s making me want to pull down the Mega Drive and breeze through Green Hill for old time’s sake.

Paramount Pictures released the very first teaser for the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Movie today.

If like me you’re a big fan of the blue blur with attitude then you may have noticed a very familiar tune playing during the 10 second teaser.

While the music has a certain level of grandiose about it, it’s still unmistakable. That’s right, it’s none other than the opening stage from the Mega Drive version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Emerald Hill Zone.

Unfortunately the teaser doesn’t have any footage to show beyond the movie’s title, mainly because filming has yet to start. However, it does give us a release date of 8th April 2022.

Hopefully we will be able to leave our homes and head to the cinemas by then.

Let us know if you’re looking forward to seeing the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie on the big screen in the comments below.
