As prices for retro games continue to increase, a sealed copy of Super Mario 64 has just sold for $1.56 million by Dallas-based auction house – Heritage Auctions. Making this the most expensive game ever sold.

This is the second record set by Heritage Auctions. With the previous record only being set last week when they sold a copy of the Legend of Zelda for an eye-watering $870,000. Both of these title titles are not only pivotal in their respective series, but also in gaming as a whole.

?#HERITAGELIVE #WORLDRECORD!! Super Mario 64 – Wata 9.8 A++ Sealed, N64 Nintendo 1996 USA just sold for $1,560,000 at #HeritageAuctions, smashing previous mark of $870K, set Friday at Heritage for The Legend of Zelda! https://t.co/SUgiijkkzL#SuperMario #Nintendo #N64 #WATA pic.twitter.com/rHpTuZl95l
— Heritage Auctions (@HeritageAuction) July 11, 2021

Now don’t be getting too excited while rummaging around in the loft for your old Nintendo 64 carts. This title was sealed and in near-perfect condition and had been certified as 9.8/10 by Wata – the video game grading firm. It’s also believed that there are only around 5 copies of the game in this condition worldwide.

However, the question has to be asked: why did a game that sold around 12 million copies manage to attract such a huge price tag? Now that such a common title has reached a seven-figure sum, what could this mean for the future of video game collectors? Could the average gamer be pushed out of their own hobby by those looking at games as an investment?

We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below. Is this new record a positive for game collectors, or potentially damaging to the hobby so many know and love?

Just in time for Mario’s 35th anniversary, Super Mario 3D All-Stars brings three great Mario adventures to the Switch.

Announced at today’s Nintendo Direct, Super Mario All-Stars is coming to the Switch. This new release bundles three of Mario’s greatest 3D adventures into one package.

First up is the 3D platformer that started it all – Super Mario 64. Originally released on… you guessed it. The Nintendo 64 back in 1996. It’s difficult to explain how impressive this title was back when it launched almost 25 years ago.

Next on the roster is the GameCube follow-up Super Mario Sunshine. While this title may not be remembered quite as fondly as Super Mario 64, it improves upon the foundation laid by its predecessor.

Finally,, we have Super Mario Galaxy. Originally released on the Nintendo Wii, we see Mario hopping not only from platform to platform, but planet to planet!

For those looking to purchase Super Mario 3D All-Stars, you can head on over the Nintendo Store (UK/US) and pre-order now. You’d better be quick though, as this title will only be available for purchase until 31st March 2021.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars is coming to the Switch on 18th September 2020.
