Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater is making a return to modern consoles

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2

Skateboarders and retro gamers alike have cause for celebration, as the classic extreme-sports series Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater is making a return to modern consoles! Recently, developer Vicarious Visions announced a remake compilation, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2, that includes the first two Pro Skatergames, complete with the original soundtrack, professional skaters, and levels.

Originally released on the PlayStation, Nintendo 64, and Sega Dreamcast in 1999 and 2000, these surprisingly addictive skateboarding titles are often considered some of the best games ever made. We already saw a remake of the original Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater back in 2012, but that version wasn’t received well by fans or critics, so we’re hoping that this fresh 2020 remake brings the franchise back into everyone’s good graces. Vicarious Visions has plenty of history with the series and has delivered great remake compilations before, so we’re excited to get on our boards and hit those combos!

Things We Can’t Wait to See in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2

There’s a lot to love about the first two Pro Skater games. From the incredibly well-designed maps to the flashy tricks, playing THPS or THPS2 is an open-ended gameplay experience that rewards creativity and cool ideas. Both original games offered career modes, as well as single skate sessions, relaxing free-skate, and multiplayer options. The second game also gave players the ability to create their own skate park by using an intuitive level editor. Every original feature and mechanic will be maintained in this new remake, with a handful of new features thrown in as well.

The remake supposedly allows you to create and customize your own character, updates the multiplayer and level editor modes to allow online play, and adds in additional career mode challenges. Generally speaking, it sounds like this remake is hitting all the right notes, making sure to respect the original game while innovating where needed. We’re especially excited to check out other players’ created parks online, as well as the new skater-specific challenges. While the original THPS games had plenty of replayability, some fresh content definitely can’t hurt.

The Sights and Sounds of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2

One of the main complaints about the 2012 remake of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater was the lack of the original soundtrack, along with several missing and altered stages. While there were many things that were great about that 2012 remake, it failed to properly recreate the vibe of the original game, ultimately resulting in a remake that felt like an overall downgrade. Vicarious Visions have taken notice of these reactions, ensuring that Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 will retain the majority of the original soundtrack, as well as every level in the original games (secret stages included). So, while you’re pulling off high-flying flip tricks worth thousands of points, you can rock out to classic tunes like Superman by Goldfinger, Guerilla Radio by Rage Against the Machine, and many more. Only 5 songs will be left out of the remake due to licensing issues, but with nearly 20 nostalgia-inducing songs included, we’re happy with what we’ve got.

You can also expect to trick and grind over all your favorite skate spots, including School II, Venice Beach, Roswell, and of course, the Warehouse. Speaking of the Warehouse, gamers who pre-order Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 will get exclusive access to the iconic Warehouse demo. This gives you the opportunity to brush back up on your skating skills and get ready for the game before release day. We’re amped up to finally play this long-awaited remake when it releases on September 4th, 2020. We can’t wait to check out everyone’s custom skate parks and compete in some trick competitions come this Fall.
