Sonic the Hedgehog Breaks Record for Largest Video Game Movie Debut

It wasn’t all too long ago that the thought of a movie based around a video game franchise was enough to make you roll your eyes and ponder “why do they bother?”

Ever since the first movie based on a video game series, Super Mario Bros. The Movie, movies and video games haven’t really gone hand-in-hand. All that could change since the release of Sonic the Hedgehog and last year’s Pokémon: Detective Pikachu movies, both showing strong opening weekends in the US.

It’s Sonic’s opening that has caught many fans off-guard, however. After undergoing a drastic character redesign, the Sonic the Hedgehog movie has beaten Detective Pikachu with a $57 million opening in the US. Proving that almost 30 years on, Sonic still has the power to pull in the audiences.

While the Sonic the Hedgehog movie isn’t without its faults, such as why are his arms blue?! The movie is certainly an enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours – especially if you have a young child – and it will be interesting to see where Sega take the movie franchise.

It’s just a shame about those arms…

  1. I really liked this movie. It was a lot of fun and Sonic looked really cool. Alot better than in the first trailer!
