Sega Teases Famitsu Scoop That Will ‘Rile Up’ Games Industry

Microsoft to Release the Xbox Series X Under Sega’s Name in Japan

This one is a little bit more outlandish, but it’s undeniable that Microsoft has not managed to gain a foothold in Japan since the it released in 2002. That’s almost Two decades without success in one of the major gaming markets.

This lack of success has also meant the Xbox is typically had more trouble getting Japanese developers to release titles on their console, leaving the PlayStation 4 and Switch to pick up many niche titles that pass the Xbox One by. Perhaps with Sega’s branding in Japan this could help make the Series X a success, as it’s no secret that Sega is still loved by many Japanese gamers.

Verdict: While this would be a novel way to break into the Japanese market, it’s unlikely a rebranding would make much difference. However, recently both Microsoft and Sega have been working closely together releasing Phantasy Star Online 2 in the west as well as the Yakuza series coming to the Xbox for the first time.

Next we look like a rumour that has been making the rounds for quite a while, could this be the news that could ”rile up” the gaming industry?

Microsoft to Purchase Sega

This is a rumour that has been making the rounds for quite a while. With Microsoft buying up a number of studios To bring into the fold, with recent acquisitions including Ninja Theory and Obsidian Entertainment.

While it’s not entirely impossible for Microsoft to look at purchasing Sega, it’s unlikely as they’re not only a game developer, but also a publisher themselves, having recently published popular titles in the Persona series, Football Manager and Two Point Hospital.

However, if Microsoft were to purchase Sega and make them one of their Microsoft Studios, this would give them a wealth of potential first party titles to rival even Nintendo. There’s the obvious one such as Sonic the Hedgehog, but also a wealth of back catalogue titles such as Shining Force and Golden Axe that are currently going unused.

Verdict: While it would certainly be a great advantage to bring Sega on as a first party developer, it’s very unlikely.

So what do you think will be announced next week? While we think it could be a new mini console, we certainly wouldn’t think that it would be enough to ‘rile up’ the gaming industry. Leave your comments below as we’d love to hear your ideas.

    • Sega already has a history with Microsoft. The Sega Dreamcast used Windows CE as an option for developers to create games (You can even see the Windows CE logo on the front of Dreamcasts).
The original xbox has a lot of Sega exclusive titles such as Jet Set Radio Future, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Sega GT 2002, Gun Valkyrie and I’m sure there were many more.
I believe that Microsoft were even considering purchasing Sega back then to hive them a running start with the Xbox.

  2. I’m sure I’m not the only one who believes that the Dreamcast was far ahead for it’s time.
    1. Online capabilities built in, including the ability to connect with broadband in 1999!
    2. Voice chat in games such as Alien Front Online.
    3. Second display with the VMU.
    4. Four player support with the built in controller ports.
    5. Fantastic third party support (at the start) as well as some unique first party games.

    • You’re also forgetting:
      6. A webcam attachment to see your friends online while playing Visual Park
      7. A web browser that let you… well browse the web. As well as an email client
      8. Mouse and Keyboard support for many FPS games. I specifically remember having split-screen Outtrigger and Quake 3: Arena deathmatches with two Keyboard and Mouse setups
      9. Support for ‘HD’ resolutions using the VGA output. It wasn’t quite HD but was really crisp at 680x480p
      10. As a console it was the birthplace of many great series such as PSO, Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia, Power Stone and many, many more.
